Their last task is then to raise eight bulls as a demonstration to elders. When these tasks are completed, the warriors are prepared to be initiated as a senior warrior a true to celebrates. The Mass are also very unique in that they structure their entire lifestyle around cattle. As stated earlier, one of the tasks that boys had to partake in is the herding of cattle. This task emphasizes the importance of the cow and teaches the boys about the Mamas way of life. Nothing goes to waste. The cows meat, milk, fat, organs and even blood is eaten and bones are used for tools whilst hides for clothes which are then died red or black for ceremonies . The Mass are a unique tribe that utilize their distinct music and dance in many ways. Their chapel style accompanied by grunts, guttural noises, and polymaths provides grounds for their most famous dance: the dumdum. Although very open to foreigners and even tourists, they do not take their traditions lightly. Each member must partake in multiple rites of passage ceremonies first to be truly accepted by society. I admire their culture and how they have remained attached to their way of fife for so many years. As some encampments have become popular tourist destination sites, I hope that I can one day venture out and witness their truly amazing way of life for myself. Patrick Lewis Is always expected to be compassionate and affectionate towards others no matter what the situation, this leads him making some dramatic decisions in the book. He grew up in a very isolated area which always made him an immigrant towards wherever he went and this alienated him from everyone around him. Lastly, Patrick evolves a relationship with Alice Gull which exposes him to a whole new world. Their relationship changes his perspective towards the people around him and his view of the world. Michael Annotated uses the expectations placed on Patrick, his life In isolation, and his important relationship with Alice to show Patrick s journey of self discovery and the idea of adaptation and change. Michael Annotated starts the book off by introducing and expanding on a very key element towards showing Patriots self discovery and adaptation, his environment. Patrick Lewis Is born and raised In a very Isolated environment which causes him to sake some decisions and learn live lessons In a very distinctive way. From his young years, Patrick is always isolated from the world, He was born into a region which did not appear on a map until 1910, though his family had worked there for twenty years and the land had been homesteaded since 1816. In the school atlas the place is a pale green and nameless. (Annotated 10). This quote clearly states how isolated Patrick is from the world as it was not even recognized on the map. The quote: In the way he steps from the dark house and at the doorway of the glowing kitchen says to the empty fields, I am here. Come visit me (Annotated 10) explains that due to a lack of colonization he tries to adapt and begins to call out to the insects for some colonization. Patrick is going to be the type of immigrant that is always going to be looking towards fitting in with other people. His first interaction with the outside world was Clara, his first love. He explores a new world outside his community with a companion. He Is forever hanged and was not going to give It up as he Ignores a chance to riches given to him by Smalls to leave Clara alone but that chance he did not take. He did this to maintain his first connection to the outside social world and to attempt to leave the isolation he grew up in. Furthermore, Patrick Lewis Is expected to be compassionate and kind, him following his expectations helps him meet people that are very Important in his life. Patrick met his first love, Clara, due to his caring personality and he even let her go with her first love due to him love for Clara. Another sign of his compassion was hon.. When he attended a show at the Waterworks and there he watches an actress bang her hand repeatedly on the floor. He then rushes to help the women which turn out to be Alice. His sense of compassion took over as he rushed thinking that the woman was a stranger. Also his realization of compassion was after the show where he began to talk to Alice, Compassion forgives too much, you could forgive the worst aware Why leave the power in his hands. There is more compassion in my desire for truth that your image of compassion (Annotated 123-124). In this conversation teen Alice and Patrick, Patrick realizes the expectation of compassion as being compassionate he gives people a chance to socialize with him. If he had not been compassionate he would not have even tried to mingle with the immigrants, save Aggravating, or even met Alice daughter Hanna. His compassion was plentiful that after Lices death he began to raise Hanna as his own. Above all getting to love and decipher Alice light a very bright light in Patriots life which was taken away after Clara left with Smalls. Alice introduces Patrick to see the world and its people in a different perspective. She began by making him realize his compassion towards others which opened up a lot of important things in Patriots life. Alice also taught Patrick that not all things are set in stone and you have to adapt to ever situation that you are put in. Alice says to Patrick, muff name the enemy and destroy their powers. (Annotated 124), which summarizes Lices dreams or ideals. As after Lices death Patrick goes into depression and then remembers this quote and begins to pursue Lices ideals and her dream in a very dramatic fashion when he attempts to destroy the city, mainly the rich. Therefore, Alice is a vital part of his life and he lives on through the ethics and lessons she has taught him. In conclusion, throughout the book In The Skin Of A Lion, Patrick Lewis expectations and influences help him towards self discovery. Patriots childhood in an isolated area allows him to become more self-sufficient and allows him to appreciate his companions. His compassion and kindness helps him meet important people in his life and further understand himself. Last of all, his relationship with Alice gives him a new perspective on life and teaches him some valuable live lessons. In fracking, drillers inject millions of gallons of water, sand, salts and chemicals- all too often toxic chemicals and human carcinogens such as benzene- into shale deposits or other sub-surface rock formations at extremely high pressure, to fracture the rock and extract the raw fuel. The purpose of fracking is to create fissures in underground rock formations, thereby increasing the flow of oil or natural gas and making it easier for workers to extract those fossil fuels. How Common Is Fracking? The fracking process is used to boost production at 90 percent of all oil and gas wells in the United States, according to the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, and fracking is increasingly common in other countries as well. Although fracking most often occurs when a well is new, companies fracture many wells repeatedly in an effort to extract as much valuable oil or natural gas as possible and to maximize the return on their investment in a profitable site. The Dangers of Fracking Fracking poses serious dangers to both human health and the environment. The three biggest problems with fracking are: Fracking leaves behind a toxic sludge (called drill cuttings)à that companies and communities must find some way to manage. Safely disposing of the sludge created by fracking is an ongoing challenge.Somewhere between 20 percent and 40 percent of the toxic chemicals used in the fracking process remain stranded underground where they can, and often do, contaminate drinking water, soil and other parts of the environment that support plant, animal and human life.Methane from fracture wells can leak into groundwater, creating a serious risk of explosion and contaminating drinking water supplies so severely that some homeowners have been able to set fire to the mixture of water and gas coming out of their faucets. Methane also can cause asphyxiation. There isnt much research on the health effects of drinking water contaminated by methane, however, and the EPA doesnt regulate methane as a contaminant in public water systems. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a least nine different chemicals commonly used in fracking are injected into oil and gas wells at concentrations that pose a threat to human health. Fracking also poses other hazards, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, which warns that besides contaminating drinking water with toxic and carcinogenic chemicals, fracking could trigger earthquakes, poison livestock, and overburden wastewater systems. Why Concerns About Fracking are Increasing Americans get half their drinking water from underground sources. Accelerated gas drilling and hydrofracking in recent years has fueled public concern about well-water contamination by methane, fracking fluids and produced water, the wastewater extracted from wells after the shale has been fractured. So its no wonder people are increasingly concerned about the risks of fracking, which is becoming more widespread as gas exploration and drilling expands. Gas extracted from shale currently accounts [in 2011] for about 15 percent of natural gas produced in the United States. The Energy Information Administration estimates it will make up almost half of the nationââ¬â¢s natural-gas production by 2035. In 2005, President George W. Bush exempted oil and gas companies from federal regulations designed to protect U.S. drinking water, and most state oil and gas regulatory agencies donââ¬â¢t require companies to report the volumes or names of the chemicals they use in the fracking process, chemicals such as benzene, chloride, toluene and sulfates. The result, according to the nonprofit Oil and Gas Accountability Project, is that one of the nations dirtiest industries is also one of its least regulated, and enjoys an exclusive right to inject toxic fluids directly into good quality groundwater without oversight. Congressional Study Confirms Fracking Uses Hazardous Chemicals In 2011, congressional Democrats released the results of an investigation showing that oil and gas companies injected hundreds of millions of gallons of hazardous or carcinogenic chemicals into wells in more than 13 states from 2005 to 2009. The investigation was initiated by the House Energy and Commerce Committee in 2010, when the Democrats controlled the U.S. House of Representatives. The report also faulted companies for secrecy and for sometimes ââ¬Å"injecting fluids containing chemicals that they themselves cannot identify.â⬠The investigation also found that 14 of the most active hydraulic fracturing companies in the United States used 866 million gallons of hydraulic fracturing products, not including the water that makes up the bulk of all fracking fluid. More than 650 of the products contained chemicals that are known or possible human carcinogens, which are regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act or listed as hazardous air pollutants, according to the report. Scientists Find Methane in Drinking Water A peer-reviewed study conducted by scientists at Duke University and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in May 2011 linked natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing to a pattern of drinking-water contamination so severe that faucets in some areas can be lit on fire. After testing 68 private groundwater wells across five counties in northeastern Pennsylvania and southern New York, the Duke University researchers found that the amount of flammable methane gas in wells used for drinking water increased to dangerous levels when those water sources were close to natural-gas wells. They also found that the type of gas detected at high levels in the water was the same type of gas that energy companies were extracting from shale and rock deposits thousands of feet underground. The strong implication is that natural gas may be seeping through either natural or man-made faults or fractures, or leaking from cracks in the gas wells themselves. ââ¬Å"We found measurable amounts of methane in 85 percent of the samples, but levels were 17 times higher on average in wells located within a kilometer of active hydrofracking sites,â⬠said Stephen Osborn, postdoctoral research associate at Dukeââ¬â¢s Nicholas School of the Environment. Water wells farther from the gas wells contained lower levels of methane and had a different isotopic fingerprint. The Duke study found no evidence of contamination from chemicals in the fracking fluids that are injected into gas wells to help break up shale deposits, or from produced water. For example, terrorist attack in Africa and Middle East took the lives of several in-store customers. These kinds of terrorist activities have negative effect on the business operation of Starbucks. The impact is affecting the overall sales and profit of the organization. Starbucks are selecting politically stable countries for their business operation. This strategy will help the organization to maximize business growth and market share. Recent financial crisis and global economic recession has reduced the purchasing power of people. Low disposable income, increasing unemployment rate, high interest rate and low per capita income reduced the consumption activities of people. Costa Coffee, JD Wetherspoon and McDonalds are the potential competitors of Starbucks. These competitors implemented competitive pricing strategy in order to achieve potential competitive advantages. Low pricing strategy of the competitors is affecting the business performance of Starbucks. The organization is one of the leading employers around the globe. Starbucks has developed ample job opportunities for the job seeking applicants in their coffee shops. This organizational process is helping in economic development and employment opportunities. Moreover, the organization has developed respectable and better social hubs where the people can visit with their friends and relatives. Effective workplace diversity motivates the employees to perform significantly. A firm commitment to delivering high quality public services through a combination of direct-provision and effective partnerships. International companies operate in an environment shaped by a vast range of economic, political, legal, cultural, market, trade, monetary, governmental, and institutional forces. These forces make up the environment of international business. These forces represent the system outside the international firm's boundaries that influence the actions of its expatriate managers. Expatriate managers help their companies compete more effectively in international businesses. Managing people in international setting s requires human resource to address a broader range of functional areas. If requires more involvement in the employee's personal life. The firm should establish different human resource management systems for different geographic locations. It must closely watch the moves made by external constituencies including foreign governments, political and religious groups. A host of other issues relating to employee compensation, health safety, welfare etc, need to be monitored carefully. Employees on international assignments represent valuable assets and hence need to the managed systematically and strategically so that they can easily adapt survive and flourish in diverse culture and environments. The Expatriate manager must be open-minded and ready to accept changes. He must be well oriented and trained on the new technologies, good communicator and good negotiator, too. All of that makes him more efficient, competitive and globally opened without distinguishing between religions, colors, genders and roots. Human resource Management in Global context Human resource Management is, perhaps, the oldest and most widely researched subject in management. Yet, as technologies change, cultural diversities occur and people's expectations undergo fundamental shifts towards newer and newer dimensions. For instance, professionals are gaining more say in the running of organizations. Even where governance is by people who own the majority stakes, their own positions and the respect they command are contingent upon their competence rather than ownership. "Management is the art of getting things done through other people. Management is the dynamic, life-giving element in every business. Without it the resources of production remain resources and never become production." (Prasad, 2006, p.260) This definition emphasizes that the expatriate managers achieve organizational objectives getting things done through the employees. Human resource Management is very essential for successful running of an enterprise. It ensures proper use of physical and human resources by deriving the Deborah Rinconhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05709492370814293924noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7010034945406036323.post-36263483677647097922020-01-30T07:54:00.001-08:002020-01-30T07:54:03.599-08:00The Short and the Tall Essay Example for Free The Short and the Tall Essay We are made aware of the patrols attitudes in Act one of The Long, The Short, and the Tall, towards the Japanese prisoner from their speech, tone of voice and actions. Johnstone, member of the patrol, shows he has a harsh attitude towards the prisoner. We can see this, as when the prisoner enters the cabin, unaware of the waiting patrol, Johnstone is the first person to grab him. He calls to the others to kill the prisoner as he holds him still. He says Get him! Quick! Do for him! Give it hump! Will you just ram it in? These are very short phrases and are said quickly and in a sharp tone of voice. He also uses allot of colloquial language and never actually says kill him. This emphasises Johnstones urgency and professionalism, but also shows that he has a hard image. Because Johnstone can say all this it proves to us that he has a harsh attitude towards the Japanese prisoner and just wants him out of the way. He says We should have done him when e first turned up. In other parts of the act Johnstones attitude stays the same. He still shows no respect for the prisoner or compassion. He still believes that the Japanese prisoner should be killed and doesnt trust him. He says You think that hed have second thoughts about putting the mockers on the lot of us? This rhetorical question shows his distrust of the prisoner. He also shows that he is jealous of the prisoner for all the attention he is now getting from the patrol. He says Two minutes ago you wouldnt touch him with a barge pole. None of you! He also said Not one of you had the guts to give me a hand. This shows he still thinks the prisoner should have been killed. It shows how he has a ruthless and barbaric attitude towards the prisoner. Also later in the play he has a fight with Bamforth over the prisoner. He is horrible to the prisoner and treats him unfairly. Mitchem has a very different attitude towards the prisoner. He has no feelings for the Prisoner but sees that he can be useful. Mitchem says I want this one alive. This makes it clear to us that Mitchem has plans. However he still shows no respect towards the Japanese prisoner. We can tell this from the way he tries to speak to the prisoner. He says Trust me to cop a raving lunatic! This refers to the prisoner and emphasises the lack of compassion and respect for the prisoner. Later in the act he shows that he had only one reason to keep the prisoner. Mitchem sees it as an everyday thing. He wants to keep the prisoner so he can be used later. He says to Bamforth Hes in your charge. Look after him. This proves he still has plans and his attitude is the same. When he realises that the patrol is in danger and is behind enemy lines he decides to ditch the prisoner. He says Were ditching him. This again proves his lack of compassion for the prisoner but also his professionalism. Bamforth has a very similar attitude towards the Japanese prisoner to Johnstone. When no one can bring themselves to kill the prisoner Bamforth steps up as if it was an everyday event and says Its only the same as carving up a pig. Hold him still. This is a simile and shows us that Bamforth also has no respect for the prisoner but it also shows us that Bamforth is learned of the gang-life in London. This is because of the colloquial language used. He also uses racist language that reflects on the time the play was set. As in the 1940s racism was not an issue. Also soldiers used racist language towards the enemy so as to feel better when killing them. He calls him an Asiatic glet. Johnstone and Mitchem also use this sort of language when they say Wog grub and Tojo. As Mitchem had put Bamforth in charge of the prisoner he began to talk to him. He said Get your hands up on your head! Like this! See! He then speaks to Evans and says Hey Taff! See that, he did it like I said! This shows that he has no respect for the prisoner and sees him as an object or pet almost. Bamforths attitudes completely turn around though. As he is looking after the prisoner he begins to get friendly with him and talks to him as a mate or one of the lads. He offers him a cigarette and looks at the prisoners photos with him. This disgusts Johnstone and when he leans in to give the prisoner a light he knocks the cigarette out of his mouth. Bamforth then stands up for his new mate and has a fight his own man, Johnstone for him! Bamforth calls the prisoner a bloke, he says to Johnstone I dont have to ask you before I give a bloke a fag! This shows he sees him as a human. He then beats Johnstone until Mitchem has to interrupt. Evans has a different attitude towards the prisoner as he shows he has compassion for other humans and cant bring himself to kill an unarmed man, at least. He steps up to do the job but then changes his mind. He says I I cant do it corp. This shows of his compassion for other human beings. It also shows how scared he was for killing someone, hence the stuttering. When he says this, his voice is scared and his whole body is tensed up! He often takes the situation light heartedly and humorously. He says to Bamforth, I always knew you were an oriental creep at heart man. This shows how Evans is a friendly and funny person. He has a compassionate attitude towards the prisoner. He actually sees the prisoner as a decent human being. We see Maclieshs attitude towards the prisoner in this section. He treats the situation with humour at first but then argues with Johnstone about what should have been done to the prisoner. For humour he says He isnt exactly what you would call a handsome bloke! This shows that he hasnt got much respect for the prisoner but he still isnt as bad as some other members of the patrol. When he is arguing with Johnstone he argues by saying You cannot order men to put a bayonet into an unarmed prisoner. He also says Havent you heard of the Geneva Connection. This shows how he is professional in his job and sticks to the rules. It also shows that he may not have the same intentions as Mitchem but still believes the prisoner should be kept. Because the prisoner has been stripped of his arms by the patrol they cannot kill the prisoner. If they were to kill him it would be illegal, murder. Because the patrol have already found out that they are behind enemy lines the prisoner is no longer of any use to them. This links to inter-relationships between the groups of characters in the play. The professional soldiers, with the higher ranks (Mitchem, Macleish and Johnstone) talk about the delicate issues while the others (privates) seem to have a bit of a laugh and mess around while not on duty. The professionals talk about the problem they have with the Japanese soldier. They decide they have to kill him! They discuss this important issue while the other members of the patrol become mates with the prisoner. Mitchem says Were ditching him! What will the prisoners new friends think about this? It is illegal to kill the prisoner as he has become a prisoner of war and has no arms, however he will be a danger and a burden to the patrol! The rest of the patrol hardly show interest in the prisoner, they are interested but forget about it after they are told to carry on with there business. They arent main characters in this part of the play. Both writers are pessimistic in their views of humanity and are acutely aware of the natural world. The representations of their characters show humans who believe that they are strong and can ably survive, but these characters many times overestimate themselves which can lead to an understanding of their own mortality as they face down death. In ââ¬Å"To Build A Fireâ⬠, the main conflict throughout is man versus nature although it would be inaccurate to say that nature goes out of its way to assault the man. The fact of the matter is, nature would be just as cold without the man's presence regardless of him being there .The environment as a whole is completely indifferent to the man, as it frequently is in naturalist literature. The bitter environment does not aid him in any way, and it will not notice if he perishes. In the same way, the dog does not care about the man, only about itself. Ironically enough though, as the man was dying he was getting upset toward the dog because of its natural warmth, the instincts that it had, and its survival skills and those were the elements that the man lacked for survival. It is ironic that the man had to die in order to find out that man's fragile body cannot survive in nature's harsh elements, regardless of a humanââ¬â¢s natural over-confidence and psychological strength. The protagonist of the story, who is purposely not given a name, as the idea that the environment will determine his fate rather than his free will. The Man is forced to accept that he is not invinc... ...nd they are simply along for the ride. Stephen Craneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Open Boatâ⬠and ââ¬Å"To Build a Fireâ⬠by Jack London are both naturalistic tales that portray the universe as a somewhat indifferent being that could not care less for the any of the men in either story. The irony is biting, yet completely subverts the ideals and values that humanity generally holds of being superior and invincible in the world. Works Cited Gurian, Jay. Explore the idea that Shakespeare intended to make Othello fit the criteria of his tragic hero with comparison to Macbeth. ââ¬â¢ By Marina Georgallides A tragic hero, determined by Aristotle, must show a nobility and virtue of a certain magnitude however, their path to happiness should be ceased by their destructive vice (Harmartia- the flaw that eventually leads to their downfall).Peripeteia, the point where the characterââ¬â¢s fortune changes, must evoke a state of pity and fear amongst the audience, and give above all, a didactic message. The outcome of this characteristic should result in a complex but sole instigation of both the heroââ¬â¢s Catharsis (a cleansing of emotion which is described by Aristotle as an effect of tragic drama on its audience) and Anagnoris when they reach their moment of realisation. It can be argued that Shakespeare fully abided by these rules in order to make a distinction between his charactersââ¬â¢ prosperity and misfortune.Fintan Oââ¬â¢Toole (post modernist critic) argues that Othello ââ¬Å"is not tragic, merely patheticâ⬠. However, Othello will be identified as a far greater tragic hero than Macbeth, illustrating how Shakespeare fully intended on creating a tragically heroic character such as Othello. As the play progresses, Othelloââ¬â¢s monumental Harmartia is gradually revealed; his sense of inherent jealousy is implemented by Iago, the Machiavellian villain, and his gullibility makes him susceptible to it.Once he becomes convinced that his wife Desdemona is unfaithful, his jealousy does indeed feed itself just as Iago ironically warns, ââ¬Å"the green eyed monster, which doth mock the meat it feeds onâ⬠(Iago- Act 3 Scene 1), leading to the heroââ¬â¢s monstrous behaviour. The apparent alliteration, ââ¬Å"death and damnationâ⬠(Act 3 Scene 3) and ââ¬Å"waked wrathâ⬠(Act 3 Scene 3), rev eals the great influence that Iago has upon Othello as his linguistic eloquence and his mental state rapidly collapse, resulting in both his use of evil imagery in language and in action, the murder of Desdemona. The hubris, argued by Helen Gardner (in 20th century) ââ¬Å"is heroic because Othello acts from inner necessityâ⬠, appearing to show Othelloââ¬â¢s desire to remake the world into a better place, an act that is heroic ââ¬Å"in its absolutenessâ⬠. This admission of ethical duty perhaps may have encouraged a contemporary audience to pity Othello as his act, although terrible in itself, is nevertheless wonderful in its own manner of righteousness. Othello therefore appears to be more honourable since his wrong doing was out of love and not of hatred, something for which Gardener seems to forgive Othello.A contemporary audience would argue that gender also plays an important role in Othello as men were regarded as stronger and wiser, making it more forgivable of Ot hello. However, a 21st century audience would view women as equally as important as men, showing that Desdemonaââ¬â¢s murder was underserved and unforgivable of Othello. Dr Johnson (1765) declared that Othello was a ââ¬Å"very useful moralâ⬠, as the protagonist shows how one can be stifled by naivetà ©; the repetition of ââ¬Å"honest Iagoâ⬠, the external forces of evil, combine to cause Othelloââ¬â¢s tragic manifestation and thus, his downfall.Macbethââ¬â¢s Hamartia is his lust for power that eventually and unsurprisingly leads into his downfall. Arthur Kirsch (1984) highlights Macbethââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"emptiness of his desires and the insatiability of his aspirationsâ⬠. Macbeth becomes infatuated with the witchesââ¬â¢ prophecy as he soon discovers how real it is, allowing him to be somewhat fixated on the idea of murdering the King and soon after, Banquo. ââ¬Å"Macbeth does murder sleepâ⬠- the use of third person indicates the exponential deteriora tion of his mental state after killing an innocent King, as a result of his unquenchable thirst for power; essentially in itself more than one of the seven vices. Both Iago and Macbeth in this case, are the embodiment of the vices, both jealousy and greed, as opposed to Othello, who is only influenced by the vice itself. J. A Bryant (1961) argues that, ââ¬Å"Macbeth is a wholly negative character who possesses the capacity for good but chooses to commit evil insteadâ⬠, illustrating that his ulterior motive wasnââ¬â¢t for the good or righteous, as opposed to Othello, but for the selfish rise to power, evidently making him less of a tragic hero; he merely chooses evil because it works to his own advantage rather than making the world into a ââ¬Ëbetterââ¬â¢ place. Both a Shakespearean and a modern audience would believe that Macbeth, like the Devil, has willed himself into a desperate position whereby he is captive of nothing except the providence he chose to ignore. In fa ct, a further aspect of his Hamartia is arguably his supposed lack of masculinity that he is constantly belittled and ridiculed for by Lady Macbeth. The use of a rhetorical question in ââ¬Å"Are you a man? â⬠indicates her ability to manipulate him into believing that he is not ââ¬Ëstrongââ¬â¢ enough to murder. This too, plays an important but yet, not as dominant, role in Macbethââ¬â¢s downfall. The second element combined to create a tragic hero is Peripeteia where the downfall from a virtuous status to a catastrophic one is evident. Regardless of however many times Othello is referred to as the ââ¬Å"Moorâ⬠by Iago, a derogatory term used to highlight his race, a Shakespearean audience will still be amazed by his aristocratic virtue as he possesses the verbal eloquence to assert to the signiors in the rule of three adjectives as ââ¬Å"potent, grave and reverendâ⬠.In Act 3 Scene 3 however, Othello makes more references to the ââ¬Å"devilâ⬠; a reflec tion of Iagoââ¬â¢s evil nature being imparted upon him, as ââ¬Å"goats and monkeysâ⬠are images that connote the devil. His eloquence of poetry in Act 1 is in stark contrast to his rather barbaric and politically incorrect behaviour in Act 3, particularly to a 21st century audience as his act of ââ¬Å"striking herâ⬠(Desdemona) across the face is an incredulous act that is totally unacceptable to feminists now but may have been deemed as common or even deserved to a contemporary audience of the 16th century. His affection dramatically changes towards Desdemona and it can be argued that Othello ââ¬Å"allows manipulation and jealousy to lead to his self-destructionâ⬠- Tasha Kelley (2010) Othello simply cannot help the jealousy that he feels within him, no matter how much of an influence Iago is upon him. At this point, Othello is entirely convinced and absolute in the killing of his wife; the use of hyperbolic language in ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll tear her all to piecesâ ⬠emphasises his sheer mercilessness since ââ¬Å"allâ⬠of Desdemona will be killed.Unlike Othello, Macbeth changes rather early on in the play, and the only real evidence that the audience sees of his nobility is what others say about him. In Act 1 Scene 2 Duncan expresses, ââ¬Å"O valiant cousin, worthy gentlemanâ⬠; the use of positive adjectives to describe Macbeth would give both a Shakespearean and modern audience a good impression of Macbeth even before he is revealed in the play.On the other hand, current and contemporary audiences would also notice that the other characters in Macbeth are the ones who prove Macbethââ¬â¢s honorary class, and not he for himself. After one consecutive scene, Macbethââ¬â¢s Peripeteia is extremely abrupt that it can be portrayed as almost non-existent. ââ¬Å"If Chance will have me King, Why Chance may crown me, Without my stirâ⬠- immediately one gains the impression of his violent underlying tone that is implied by the use of the word ââ¬Å"stirâ⬠, revealing to a contemporary audience that his destructive intentions are intrinsic.According to Aristotle, there must be a clear distinction between the characterââ¬â¢s prosperity and misfortune; Macbeth, as a tragic hero, does not condition himself to these rules religiously enough and it therefore, can be argued that his downfall is far too early on in the play for an audience to fully grasp his nobility. Whereas, Othelloââ¬â¢s greatness is explored thoroughly for two whole Acts, allowing an audience of any time period, to understand that his noble qualities are innate.A contemporary audience, for example, would understand the reason for Othelloââ¬â¢s downfall much better than they would with that of Macbethââ¬â¢s as the play enables him to develop as a character and thus, show his true intentions, which are in this case, to love and protect Desdemona. Alas, an alternative interpretation of Macbeth of a Shakespearean audience would b e that he is an incessantly complacent man who, by all means, allows arrogance to corrupt his mind even in the first scene of the play. The most famous of quotes where Macbeth visualises a dagger, represents his wavering resolve and lust for power that slowly descends into his madness. ââ¬Å"Is this a dagger, which I see before meâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Act 1 Scene 7, the use of a rhetorical question illustrates Macbethââ¬â¢s hallucination of seeing an object that is clearly not there, which in comparison is a major downfall for someone who was deemed to be ââ¬Å"valiantâ⬠at the start of the play.Susan Snyder (1994) states that ââ¬Å"the play provides no answers to the questions it raises about the relative culpability of the witchesââ¬â¢ equivocal predictions and Macbethââ¬â¢s potential to commit murderâ⬠. Evidently, there is no real justification or distinction in Macbethââ¬â¢s downfall other than his sick ambitious need for power. The third criterion that qualifies a tragic hero is Anagnorisis, where the protagonist acknowledges his/her own flaw that has led them to their downfall. After all the accusations and trauma that Desdemona has been through, her last and most angelic words being, ââ¬Å"Commend me to my kind lord- O, farewell! â⬠This suggests that she is a saint for forgiving all that Othello has done to her and shows just how much she loved Othello; a contemporary audience would ultimately feel pity for her as she is not the one to blame. However, a different view of Desdemona and what she represents has emerged over recent years amongst modern audiences; feminist and new historic critics haveà examined her character in relation to the society she moves in.Marilyn French (1982), explores the masculine and misogynistic value system within Othello, and despite Desdemonaââ¬â¢s assertiveness in choosing her own husband, French emphasises that Desdemona ââ¬Å"must be obedient to malesâ⬠and is ââ¬Å"self-denying in the e xtremeâ⬠thus when she dies she is a stereotype of female passivity. Once killing Desdemona, Othello begins to express his sincere remorse for his wrongdoing through the repetition of alliteration. The use of alliteration in ââ¬Å"Cursed, cursedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"cold, coldâ⬠, Act 5 Scene 2, reveals how ashamed he is with himself for committing such a crime as he is emphasising it through the repetition of consonance sound ââ¬Å"câ⬠, and above all, goes closer to prove his tragic hero status. Through his two speeches, Othello is able to elaborate on the fact that he is wrapped with guilt; the rhyming couplet of: ââ¬Å"I kissed thee ere I killed thee: no way by this, Killing myself, to die upon a kiss. â⬠epitomises his Anagnoris as he realises his sheer love for Desdemona with what remains within him, a flare of eloquence. In stark contrast, there is no real evidence of Macbethââ¬â¢s Anagnoris, and in fact, he behaves rather arrogantly about the witchesââ¬â ¢ predictions because he believes that no real harm will happen to him. In Act 5 Scene 3, Macbeth expresses a very short speech in which no lamenting or mourning is apparent; ââ¬Å"I have lived long enough; my way of life Is fallââ¬â¢n into the searâ⬠is but a mere acknowledgement of his circumstances rather than realisation of his tragic flaw. A Shakespearean audience would notice that perhaps Macbeth has not fully repented for his mistake and is therefore, in terms of Aristotle, not a true, classified tragic hero.Macbeth is determined to continue fighting for his life whereas traditionally a tragic hero, such as Othello, should ultimately understand their downfall in exchange for their life. In Act 5 Scene 5, Macbeth does in fact have the verbal eloquence to express himself even in a state of supposed despair. The use of personification in ââ¬Å"Lifeââ¬â¢s but a walking shadowâ⬠reinforces the state of his ignorance to register his own wrong doing and therefore, both a modern and contemporary audience can advocate that they do not feel the same sympathy as they do for Othello. Finally, the last criterion of a tragic hero is Catharsis; the point at which the tragic hero cleanses his heart and the audienceââ¬â¢s too. Othello, despite all that he has been through, returns to the articulate and passionate man, and for that, an audience can feel as though the previous trauma of Desdemonaââ¬â¢s death combined with his own wicked imagery is obliterated and washed from them. ââ¬Å"And very sea-mark of my utmost sailâ⬠is an example of how Othello is able to speak in iambic pentameter even in such a horrific mental state, reinforcing an audienceââ¬â¢s perception of how truly noble and titled he is.Most honourably, he is not afraid of killing himself in the name of love; he simply ââ¬Å"kisses Desdemona, and diesâ⬠, making him appear as more of a tragic hero than Macbeth, who fights to live on. He leaves the audience feeling bere aved and pitiful because, despite his jealousy, he ââ¬Ëloved Desdemona too wellââ¬â¢, a crime that was surely too harshly punished. Although, Macbethââ¬â¢s death is rather less tragic and more heroic in the sense that he refused to kill himself by ââ¬Å"falling on my swordâ⬠; an audience would regard him as more honourable towards himself. Before Malcolm kills him, he partly recognises his wrong doing in the little speech that he gives; ââ¬Å"Of all men else I have avoided thee: But get thee back, my soul is too much chargââ¬â¢d With blood of thine alreadyâ⬠. Irrespective of the fact that Macbeth didnââ¬â¢t kill himself as he should have done, the imagery of ââ¬Å"bloodâ⬠reveals the extent of which Macbeth fights like a true soldier till the end. Unfortunately, as a modern audience, we cannot feel the same sympathy as we do for Othello as he neither recognises his flaw nor kills himself because of it; an imperative required for a true tragic hero.Mac beth is a rapid play that does not allow the main protagonist to develop as a character and for that reasoning; Macbeth lacks many of the imperative qualities needed within a tragic hero such as Peripeteia and Anagnorisis. Without a single doubt, Othello is one of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s greatest tragic heroes as fought for by Helen Gardner and Dr Johnson, regardless of Fintan Oââ¬â¢Tooleââ¬â¢s perception of Othello being ââ¬Å"merely patheticâ⬠. We can advocate otherwise that in fact Othello fulfils all four criterias of Aristotleââ¬â¢s definition of a tragic hero. Christopher Herbert, the author, argues of the importance that religion and events of the world played on the writing of ââ¬Å"Dracula.â⬠There are two parts to the article, one is ââ¬Å"Religion/Superstitionâ⬠and the second part is ââ¬Å"The Vampire in the Church.â⬠Both parts are vital to the article. The title of the article itself is a very good example of what the main point of the article is about, religion. The author makes many points in which the group of vampire hunters pray for God to help them (Herbert p. 100). They also greatly depend on ââ¬Å"holyâ⬠things, such as the wafers, crucifixes, and of course God himself. All these things are very important to them, because they trust and believe that they will work in their fight against evil. Another aspect of the religious aspect is the references and events made parallel to the ââ¬Å"Bible.â⬠One of these examples is how Quincey died, and how this was supposed to be a representation of Jesus Christ dying (Herbert p. 100-101). Another reference to the Bible was made by Renfield, ââ¬Å"He later likens himself to Enoch (Genesis 5:21-24), who ââ¬Å"walked with Godâ⬠(Herbert p. 107). These are just a few examples of the ââ¬Å"Bibleâ⬠references made in ââ¬Å"Dracula.â⬠The main thing discussed in the first part is how different Dracula is compared to the rest. This is a very powerful statement, and a very accurate statement. The solution to curing many diseases is just around the corner because of the advancements in embryonic stem cell research. The much needed support of society can speed up the progression of this research so lives can start to be saved. Embryonic stem cell research should be pursued because it has the potential to help or even cure many diseases, shows more promise than adult stem cells, and is morally ethical. Embryonic stem cells are found in human blastocysts (Marcovitz 17). A blastocyst is a very young embryo (just a few days old) that contains around 200 undifferentiated stem cells (Marcovitz 17). German Zoologist Valentin Hacker coined the term ââ¬Å"stem cellâ⬠after he discovered them in a blas tocyst of a crustacean (Marcovitz 18). Embryonic stem cells were collected for the first time in 1988 by Dr. James Thomson of University of Wisconsin and by Dr. John Gearheart of Johns Hopkins (Panno 76). These stem cells are unspecialized; they do not perform a specific function like cells such as muscle and nerve do (ââ¬Å"Stem Cellsâ⬠). They are also pluripotent, meaning they have the ability to divide and become specialized cells (ââ¬Å"Stem Cellsâ⬠). Even though the townspeople are shocked that Emily is going on carriage rides with ââ¬Å"a Northerner, a day laborerâ⬠(83), no one says anything to her despite their concerns: that ââ¬Å"even grief could not cause a real lady to forget nobles obligeâ⬠(83). The major usage of the RSS is mainly to subscribe and handle the web content from different blogs and broadcast to subscribe on twitter. The inspectional pattern works where the Twitter has tried to develop access to the social aggregation as per the RSS usage and the put to tweet based on message of different services. There are life stream services which include things as per the Friend Feed systems and turn to pull in and cross to different posts. With the aggregation, there are apps used to change and authenti cate properly using the development and what the data wants out of particular requirement. There is a need for OAuth development in order to stop the behaviour of abuse and handle the control and monitoring the systems. This will help the end users to work where twitter claims the usages of complete change in the apps and services depending upon the data feeds. The pattern and usage of RSS feed is based on applying on different support makes which will be under the ability to build the user and the hashtags based on the timeline system. There are different Twitter timeline features which are helpful to be created under the even interaction that search and pull in full conversation based on the changes for certain hashtags. There are broader ecosystem which impact the complete system enquiry and work on changing the functioning and development. There are user tokens for different applications work on Twitter which can cap into using the changes. The Twitter is applied to hold and set the clients to replicate and work on the certification of product depending upon rules and regulation. There are certain API terms which are important for taking care that the data is not syndicated. It is important beca use Twitter can absorb data and work on the exposure of an API system with respect to the cloud servicing. There are certain URLS which run on the Twitter to handle the feature built systems important for the news aggregation. The time spend on twitter directs to Instagram and other services for different tweets of user. When the CEO Mike McCue speculated and resigned, he decided that the API terms could potentially limit and pull all the data from different streams of twitter. This will help in sorting and handling the development of power usage as per the rules and regulations. Twitter is mainly for all the registered users who can read the posts and work and get the access easily. There is a possibility to reach to different people and get the solutions of their queries online. The software development is based on designing the software and working on different platforms which will direct to handle the activity as per the usage of the maintenance of service codes. This applied to handle the planned and structured proceed as per the development which includes the research and prototype as per the maintenance. The software tries to provide a variety of needs important for the clients and business to work on a more customised software system. RSS is Really Simple Syndication which works on different web feed formats and try to hover on all the used publishing based on the works like blogging and other headlines of news. This will be in a standardised format when the RSS document will try to include all the summarised texts and metadata for authorship and publishing different dates. This RSS feeds helps in beneficially matching to syndicate the entire content automatically and provide the standardised files XML files which will allow as per the information that will be published under the programs and the benefits readers take to subscribe under the timely updates. The favourite websites try to take care of the usage of software system called as RSS reader or aggregator which is based on web based systems and desktop based system and the mobile based devices. This will subscribe to enter into reading the feed and clicking on the feeding icon. The RSS develops and work to emerge on differentiated pattern which try to subscr ibe on different RSS feeds and work on handling the browsing monitoring for constant updates of information system. There are certain web based and desktop based feeds which are important to enter into the URL which will help in reading and checking the regularity of information and provide interface system. The tweets and hashtags are basically helps the users to update the profile and working on different web based relay chat which will help in remarkable involving in different principles that work to appear on the chronological order system. The scrolling down of page and different hashtags are important for different microblogging services. This will help in creating easy usage of system and searching that will present as per the usage and photo sharing on the Instagram and Twitter. The users can sign and work within IRC networks to label and come across different channels so that they will be insert the hashtags with style. The contribution of the hashtags in a statement helps in adding a location and contributing the risks to raise the ire of the communal system. There are warnings based on unrelated tweets that direct to settle the suspension. Certain functions are promoted and worked under the Hashtags which provide the intension to use the obscure system and led to the changing of functions with the system of finding and following. There are certain non-short-message-oriented services which are based on user comment systems and that directs to the blogging comments which can help in constant improving rate of the user activities on the search. There is a complete enabled view which will help in broadcasting and displaying a hashtag as per the encouragement during different programs. JSON is mainly for using the human read text which will help in transmitting the different data objects and contribute to the value which is used for the browser server communication setup. There are basic types which are number, string, Boolean, array and objects which are important for handling the complete collection and working to hold the intended work as per the flow of information. There are implementation based on the overflow and underflow that rounds to stand and work on the data errors and regular expressions. This will help in data formatting in a proper manner and focusing on the data serialisation impact. This will possess the system to execute the JSON text and work on the programming system to deal with the different data retrieving services. The data driven documents, d3, are mainly important for the interactive visualisations and helping to implement the complete CSS, SVG and other HTML5 standards. This is important to take a complete control over the visual that will develop and work on developing and interacting with the web. These are enabled using the links and different scroll pages that will monitor and handle the interactivity with the users. There are success based on the perfuse virtualisation system that try to develop and utilise the system as per the embedded system of the HTML webpage. The operations of D3 are mainly to build up a system which can sort, reverse and work on different accessing methods. These are for mapping and reducing the patterns of functionality for order and shuffling. It is the best support for mapping and setting the collections. UML Diagram The UML diagram for the system developed is as follows: The interface for the developed dashboard is an HTML file, which has been named as index.html, which is the standard name of homepage for any website. This has been done so, so that if the project is launched on a server, the homepage can be detected by the browser easily. The function created for the D3 implementation has been named as d3Function. It has been included as a script in the HTML file, which is index.html. The script has been added in the body part of the file. The function takes the input of twitter data from the JSON file, and make the plots accordingly. The variables are separated and analysed. The variables have been defined for each type of chart and functionality. The data input is taken in an array to be analysed and to be worked up on. The charts are plotted as bar chart a line chart. The area under the curve is shaded. The chart is drawn by the use of another function, which is drawChart function. It takes the data of date group, which is user defined, by scrolling, dragging and selecting the date group from the selector chart at the top of the screen. The day can also be selected for the same, and to plot the data of a specific day. The HTML file is linked with the JavaScript files of D3, twitter and other support files. CSS style sheet is also linked with the index file to style the webpage. System Architecture The MVC architecture (Model View Controller Architecture) has been followed in the development of the system. The system has been modelled using HTML pages, which is the interactive page of the system. The user can control the page, and interact with it using mouse clicks and drags. The help has been provided on the page for the mouse clicks and drags. This constitutes the view part of the architecture. The view has been supported by the following CSS files: css css Bootstrap-theme.css css css css The model has been made using D3 scripts and JavaScript. There are number of JavaScript used in the development of the software. They are: js js js js The database is the controller of the software. The database has been taken as an input from the JSON file obtained from twitter data for tweets. The JSON file has been included in the HTML pages using D3 functions. The following code has been used to obtain the JSON file: d3.json("tweets.json", function(error, data) The data obtained from the JSON file is then passed on to the other functions to plot the relevant results, tables and charts on the HTML. The data is in standard JSON format, and behaviour of the program can be changed by changing the JSON file. The hashtag is considered to handle the social network system where it is important for the users to depending upon the creation and usage of all hashtags. There is a searching based on presenting different messages along with tagging all the flow. There is a usage based on social activism. Working with the JQuery platform which will simplify the side client with the scripting to HTML. The installation of JQuery Is free open based which works on navigating a particular document and work to handle the elements and create animation for different events. With the development of all the capabilities, there are certain plugins to handle and create abstractions which works on the advanced effects of a higher level scheme. This will allow a creation of all the powerful dynamic patterns and select the transversal and enabling the selector engine system. The JQuery works on focusing: Encouragement in the separation of all the JavaScript and the HTML patterns. There is a need to provide all the simple syntax which will be able to handle the events and work over to call the JavaScript functions. There is a need to clear and promote with different features that will handle the functional names. The elimination of all the cross-browsing capabilities work on different browsing where the activities are slight to provide and handle the consistent interface patterns which work across different browsers. The extension of all the new events and elementary framework will try to handle and reuse them as plugins. With the browsing support, it is important to select all the multi-browsing open source patterns for using the elements and select the nodes depending upon the events all the animations. The JQuery structure is mainly to create and work on plugging in to extend the functionality which are available on Web. There is an important source of system which include all the patterns of development and provide a testing framework using a QUnit pattern. This is important for the automation framework of tests. The hashtags are intended to handle the particular event and work to reach to the trending topics and work on specific topics. The users need to work on finding and following all the subscription lists which will broadcast all the employed patterns. There is a need to use the social network by posting and hash-tagging with a particular subject. Sequence Diagram The sequence followed by the program is: The complete data is imported from the JSON file. The user can drag on chart to plot specific data. The reset button renders complete data again. Data Flow Diagram The data is imported from the JSON file. The data is then stored in a variable, and passed to the d3 function for the data analysis. D3 calls the specific plot functions and plots the data. The data driven documents work on making and handling the succession for the protovis framework. The D3.js allows to work on the development and handling the contexts to integrate with the user interactivity pattern. The efforts work on integration pattern for web browsing with the user rich interactivity. The profuse with the visualisation works on requiring the usage of Java and the visualisation pattern. There is a need to embed with all the HTML pages that use the D3 pattern with the JavaScript functions and working on adding transitions along with different styles of CSS. The D3.js works on generating the text and graphical patterns for the charts and programs. The selection of the CSS selector is working under the Document Object Model which operates and manipulate all the classes and identify the transitions. This includes in getting and matching with the attributes to display the texts and the styling depending upon the process of modification. The dependency on data works on transition of values and creating an interpolation of certain time. For advancement of data, there is a need to load the driving data with the element creation. The D3.js works on the given dataset systems for handling the SVG systems with the properties of shapes and colours to handle the transitional behaviours. The appending and bounding to the documents follow all the command with the existence of array support. The sorting, reverse and shifting and accessing methods work on concatenating the joins and slice with the computations of convex hull to a particular set of points. The broadcasting of all the media works to relate with the branded pattern of Twitter usernames which encourage and trend the hashtags. There is a twitter director that identify the usage of hashtags with the temporary pattern. the socialised system of works on social media platforms for a better customer service experience. Implementation The twitter data has been taken as input for the generation of charts. The data is stored in a JSON file. The d3 JavaScript has been used to take the data as input and analyse it. The analysed data is then plotted on graphs. HTML has been used as an interface for the output. The HTML page has been styled using CSS. D3 has been used as a script in the HTML file. Thee function has variables defined for SVG, data of the JSON file, the charts and its colours. The data range is cropped and used for analysing. Charts have been plotted for: Impression made by tweets Retweets Favourites User Profile clicks URL clicks Hashtag clicks An option has been provided for the user to filter the data based on time (by user interface in the chart), and days of the week. Testing The dashboard developed has been tested on the Mozilla Firefox browser. The rendering has been successfully completed, ad data has been plotted there. The website is, thus, ready to be launched on a server. The screenshot of the dashboard has been attached above. The JSON file for twitter data can be changed to analyse a different set of data. The browser has to be launched in developer mode to test the plots locally. The general mode doesnt allow import of JSON file, due to security reasons. This problem is not faced when the site is launched from a server. The JSON files works on defining a structure for the validation and the documentation formation. There is a need to work on controlling the interaction system and the JSON schema works on providing a better quality of data depending upon the modification. The concepts are based through the XML schema patterns which can help in serialisation and the deserialization of tools which are important for the schema and data. These schema are describing the entire data pattern. The applications of JSON works on the RPC control of protocol which builds and define structure to handle the types and commands of data. With the changing JSON technique, AJAX is added to it to handle the webpage to work for handling the webpage with the ability to request the new data patterns. The inc orporation and improvement of twitter is done through using a proper search box with the database to set up a server and work on the implementation format. There is a need to use and work on the client usage systems which will request the data to JSON from the server systems. For handling and creating the information, there is a process to collect data and process the information using the hashtags data which will help in setting the entire public API along with handling the tweets which will use the user and keywords to standardise the csv format. With the processing of data matter, there are words occurrence which will help in providing the steps under the tm packages. The associations file is where the source are the words which are important tweet and target the people and the value count. System Evaluation The software has been created with the following functionalities: Import of the twitter data, for the given hashtag, using JSON file. The implementation of D3 to import the JSON file. The storing of data in a local variable. The passing of data to the d3 function for analysis. The parsing of date in the required format. The call of respective plot functions. The viewing of tweets. The user interface with mouse click and drags. The implementation of an HTML page for the interface. The styling of TML pages using CSS files. The system is fully functional and can be launched on a server. Further Improvements The system can be further improved by implementing the following functions: The implementation of interface and interaction using keyboard. The real time fetching of data and plot accordingly, which is for the real time tweet feeds. The option to change the hashtag for which the data is fetched from the twitter feeds. Plot for more functionalities file: User profile Number of followers Number of retweets of retweets. Following count of the profiles. Time stamp of the tweets. Conclusion The software has been successfully developed. D3 has been used for data analysis, plotting, rendering and the overall development of dashboard. HTML has been used for the interface. JavaScript has been used extensively in the project. Twitter data has been analysed. The page has been styled using CSS file. The testing of the dashboard has been done on Mozilla Firefox browser. The site is working as expected. It can be launched on a web server. The data for the twitter analysis can be changed by changing the JSON file, as per requirement. The code has also been included in the HTML file to show the twitter data as well. It has been commented out, as it was used just for testing purpose. It can be shown again, if required, by just un-commenting the part of the code. Americans take pride in having access to many rights; including the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness as well as the ability to be their own individual. The United States government wants to ensure that nothing interferes with the rights, which the founders fought so hard to establish. While American politicians want to ensure that Americans are entitled to their rights different politicians prioritize issues as they often have contrasting views on which is more important for the American people. While campaigning to be the next president of the United States both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney for the most part had a difference of opinion on what was important and what the right course of action was, which resulted in their campaign platforms targeting different issues. In his 2008 presidential campaign speech, Senator Barack Obamaââ¬â¢s platforms primary focus was ensuring that change came to America. Obama argued that President Bush and his Republican administration had not provided enough government programs for Americans, which had harmed their dignity. Obama sought to preserve Americans dignity by finding an alternative to the Republican philosophy of allowing Americans be their own individual arguing that the method had failed. Obama insisted that there was a way to be a successful individual with freedom while simultaneously having access to government assistance programs. Obama promised that each American had the, ââ¬Å"freedom to make of our own livesâ⬠¦ but that we also have the obligation to treat each other with dignity and respectâ⬠(Obama, 2008). Obama argued that Americans needed to be cared for and instead of government cuts the focus shou. .ns in every aspect and this includes the lowest taxes. Romney believed that lower taxes would inspire people, which would create innovation and lead to a successful nation. As a result, both Obama and Romney believed they could make a difference in American politics and improve the lives of the American people. Both candidates waned the best for their people and nation. However, while Obama believed in providing an affordable healthcare plan, additional government programming and ensuring the preservation of Americanââ¬â¢s dignity; Romney believed that the focus should be on increasing national defense, limiting the federal government s role in the lives of Americans and promoting Americaââ¬â¢s greatness. In the end, both candidates recognize the importance of a good education and that America was the best nation in the world and the place where greatness is achieved. Democracy is based on the concept of the rule ââ¬Å"of the people, by the people, for the people. ââ¬Å"The success of a democratic form of government is based on the nature and condition of the electorate that they are literate enough to express their will in the ballot, that they have sufficient education to understand and analyze and decide on vital issues, and that they canimpose discipline on their emotions and themselves. To meet these requirements of democracy, Fambona tells us, most developing countries are still incapable. So the story ends in tragedy and death with the participants not really knowing it is all about. II.Commentary According to Edward Brathwaite, ââ¬Å"creolizationâ⬠is a cultural processââ¬âmaterial, psychological and spiritualââ¬âbased upon the stimulus/ response of individuals within the society to their [new] environment and to each otherââ¬âit is a reciprocal activity, a process of intermixture and enrichment, each to each. Those countries that have such creole democracy need to embrace, mixture of people, making a new community where there is co-existence of diverse races and culture. Creole democracy have two political parties rely on having the majority of votes on their side: ââ¬Å"the efforts of the party leaders were directed toward herding the largest possible number of men.â⬠One party is the government and the other one are rebels. Both of them in competition: ââ¬Å"the bosses of each side would spy upon each other to see how many voters were being added to their rivals forces.â⬠The voters are uneducated about how they will vote and are just merely instructed by their chosen party: ââ¬Å"party hacks were going from group to group explaining the procedure of the morrows election.â⬠The voters already have a foresight that there will bewar that will happen in this kind election and begin to show mistrust on the electorates: ââ¬Å"`Elections! `scoffed one vaquero. `Before long well be hearing Pum! Pum! And then, ho, for stabbing hides!ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"War is not new anymore to them because it happenedà before, especially during elections: ââ¬Å"to this bit of grim humor in the face of possible tragedy.â⬠and ââ¬Å"this was a slogan familiar to everybody, and many smiled bitterly at the memories it awoke.â⬠It is not impossible for this to happen because of the competition and influence of both parties. In war, the revolutionary officers have machetes while the rebels have guns on their hands. Both have a advantages and disadvantages: ââ¬Å"for in a hand-on-hand struggle a heavy gun is a hindrance rather than a help. ââ¬Å"Both parties are keeping a secret on the public: ââ¬Å"they dont tell the truth. If were going to war, letââ¬â¢s go but let them not hide from us. ââ¬Å"The story reveals the role of women. Men compare them to hens and portray them as weak beings: ââ¬Å"Theyre not afraid that well run off into hiding like so many hens or women The party leaders dont care much about the safety of their people: ââ¬Å"Be sure to cry out loud, now, when you want us to come to your help.â⬠sending the vaquero to spy on the other party. In this scene, it shows that women in that time are used as a shield: ââ¬Å"Heres a woman to go along and keep you company. ââ¬Å"The vaquero acted arrogant and fearless as he go along and thought of his leader belittling him: ââ¬Å"They think Iââ¬â¢m afraid.â⬠The young vaquero didnt think of any elderly respect for the old man as he killed him defenseless. But when he killed the old man he was scared but proud of what he did: ââ¬Å"the youth run off at one at his leader and not without a certain boastfulness told, in the presence of all, just what had occurred. ââ¬Å"A woman was again portrayed as rather someone to be killed even an elderly one: ââ¬Å"Kill and old manWhy not an old womanâ⬠Realizing that the other group will hunt down the vaquero, he was just asked to h ide or hell die, receiving no help from the leader who used him: ââ¬Å"I cant do a thing. Quick! Off to the mountains!â⬠The vaquero didnt know that what he did was a crime as a sign of an uneducated man who just his leader: ââ¬Å"Then it is true that this was a crime?â⬠All that he thought was to kill the other party with one reason at all. That he is an enemy. Realizing his mistake he turned himself to justice. Having regrets of his ignorance and still confused: ââ¬Å"But werent we supposed to conquer them? Werent they our enemies? ââ¬Å"The people of Camoruco are not yet ready for democratic changes. For them to have a successful democracy, the public and the electorates should be first educated about the meaning of democracy. The story proved that education ofà people and the leaders will only turn into chaos. The leaders should not think about themselves and be selfish but rather to put into mind that democracy is ââ¬Å"of the people, by the people and for the peopleâ⬠. Each of the public should have a contribution for the success of the country not just merely being influenced by powerful leaders. The leaders of both party in the story dont have a clear goal of what they will do in their country, cant even notice the issues they are facing and discipline themselves rather all they want is to be in power. He was educated at Eton but refused to attend a higher education establishment but never the less was still very well educated. He joined the Burma Police Force instead for a six-year stretch. When Orwell returned to England, he began his writing career and produced some of his most famous works. His inspiration was the political state of Europe with dictators such as Hitler and Stalin dominant. This led to the novella Animal Farm, which was written in 1944. It shows Orwells disgust with Stalins style of socialism. Animal Farm was very controversial as the state of the USSR was admired by many socialists of the time; thus his publisher Victor Gollancz refused to accept it, as did T. S. Eliot and Jonathan Cape before Martin Secker Warburg, Ltd finally accepted it in 1945. This slowed the publishing of the novella by eighteen months. It is possible to trace the origins of Animal Farm back to Orwells spell of fighting in the Spanish Civil War. He saw himself primarily as a political writer. A democratic socialist, who avoided party labels, hated totalitarianism and he became progressively disillusioned with methods of communism, his plain, colloquial style made him a highly effective pamphleteer and journalist. One of his first pamphlets was called Inside the Whale (1940). Out of all Orwells work Animal Farm is still the most famous and the way it deals with political satire. Both Swift and Orwell mixed in literary circles, Swift with writers such as Steele, Addison, Congreve and Pope. Orwell with T. S. Eliot, Cyril and Virginia Wolf. Jonathan Swift was born in 1667 in Dublin where he was educated at Trinity College. Swifts family originated in England, but then settled in Ireland, due his familys strong Protestant background, although he did support Catholics as well, as shown in Modest Proposal threw no separation of the poor, into religious beliefs. In 1689 Swift became private secretary to William Temple who introduced him to the literary, political and aristocratic circles of the time. It was from Temples style that Swift developed his literary powers and got involved in political affairs. During his time with Temple, Swift wrote three satires A Tale of a Tub, The battle of books and Discoveries concerning the mechanical operation of spirit. Swift became vicar of Laracor in Ireland but kept returning to England where he was heavily involved in politics. After Temple died Swift, began to produce pamphlets. In 1701 he wrote one praising the conduct of the Whig, or liberal leaders. This work, A discourse of the contest and dissensions between the nobles and commons in Athens and Rome. The majority of Swifts literary pieces are based on real people and events. For example Gullivers Travels (1726), lampooned the Whigs as the little men while his friends the Tories took the form of Gulliver. From this point on Swift focused his energy on Irish affairs. A Modest Proposal was written in 1729, as a pamphlet discussing the political state of Ireland at the time. Animal Farm and a modest Proposal are written in entirely different genres. Orwells Animal Farm, is written in the novella genre, more specifically as an extended fairy story. The novella is an allegorical representation of events in Russia following the fall of the Tsar in 1917. It mainly focuses on Stalins government of the country from the 1920s to the end of the Second World War. The story can also be taken as a more general attack on and analysis of the search for power and the way in which corrupt figures can gain and manipulate for their own purposes. The animals revolution directly mirrors the Russian Revolution; the animals over throw the humans, Just as the Bolshevik Party over threw the Romanov Dynasty. Swifts A Modest Proposal is written as a political pamphlet, arguing an expedient solution to the problem of poverty among Irelands poor. One of sixty plus pieces on Irish affairs Swift wrote after 1920. The pamphlet can be broken down into six sections. To begin with Swift sets out the problem, which is the overcrowding in Dublin, this is followed by his solution to sell yearling children of the poor, to the wealthy for food. In the next section Swift digresses and talks about how his suggestion can be executed. In the following section a list of advantages is given for the reader. Section five gives the reader some reasons why no other solutions will work. The final section is Swifts disclaimer, this covers him for has previously been said. Swifts satirical writing gives him the freedom to taunt the government of the time, with his appalling proposal. George Orwells style in Animal Farm is a novella as opposed to a pamphlet like Modest Proposal. This is noticeable through the narrative form, characters and a theme. The theme, corruption of power differs to Modest Proposal that concentrates not so much on corruption but an attack on the selfish misuse of power. E. g. Swift thought of himself as English. At the time of the Battle of the Boyne, when William defeated James II in 1690 (the Glorious Revolution had been peaceful in England but bloody in Ireland), Swift was with Temple in Surrey. Yet after this time he became increasingly known as an Irish patriot. What he experienced in Ireland was very similar to the experience of the American colonists under George III all the disadvantages of direct rule from London, and none of advantages. Since no politician in England gave much thought to Ireland, the land was bled by absentee landlords, denied fair trading terms and ruled by second-rate officials who could behave irresponsibly with no one to care about the consequences. Corruption is shown almost immediately through Old Major and his commandments, which act as a motif, misleading the animals into believing what he says is best for them. To begin with he tells the animals All animals are equal then the 7 commandments are abridged for the last time simply reading, All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others. At this point the pigs are behaving like humans: buying newspapers, smoking and wearing clothes. Although from the beginning the animals are anthropomorphic but still retain enough animal characteristics for them to be credible as farm animals. The pigs take this to the extreme. The authorial voice in Animal Farm is that of a storyteller writing in a traditional format. Simple detail is paid to characters and setting for example references to the farm and immediate identification with the animals: The hens perched themselves on the window -sills, the pigeons fluttered up to the rafters Simple and straight forward. Animal Farm follows a conventional narrative structure. The narrator tells its events in chronological order. The story itself contains a believable mixture of human and animal characters- even when the human characters are seen to clearly understand what the animals are saying- for example, when Pilkington makes his to Napoleon speech at the end of the novel, the reader believes that the two understand each other. The repetition of various ideas and images forms a pattern in the text. In particular Majors speech at the start of the novella is echoed and referred to throughout the novella, to provide a standard by which the pigs actions are judged. The placing of the speech at the start of the novella, means that the reader shares the animals enthusiasm for the vision of the future and becomes progressively more disappointed as the novella continues and we see those ideals destroyed: we are told several times that the animals work like slaves. The novella is aimed at the masses, as it is cleverly written to reach the population on a number of levels; one being the message that not everything you are told by the authoritarian figure shouldnt be believed and trusted. Animal Farms purpose is to highlight the corruption of power in the USSR under Stalin. A Modest proposal however addresses only the educated middle classes. The authorial voice in A Modest Proposal is of an English economist, spoken in a matter-of-fact manner leading the audience into agreement with the argument, and then giving a massive blow with his actual proposal, the shock of undeniable cannibalism. E. g. always advising the mother to let them suck plentifully in the last month, so as to render them plump and fat for a good table. It could be argued that Orwells writing directly descends fro that of Swifts simple, straightforward and concise. The format of Animal Farm consists of very little dialogue, it is written in story form similar to a childrens storybook with a lot of information condensed into a few words. Orwell makes a statement and leaves it! The plot carries forward at a rapid rate and doesnt get involved in small affairs. Orwell allows events to speak for themselves. There are no lengthy sentences introspective passages or emotional feelings. It has an objective style with the reader always kept at arms length. The humans in the novel are stereotypical as is shown on page 41 with Mr Whymer the greedy lawyer He was a sly-looking little man. Orwells simplistic child-like style shows through with his explanation of what a cheque is. It is almost biblical in its simplicity. Biblical overtones appear again with the commandments, which equates to animalism 7 deadly sins. Swift uses syllogism in his proposal. He turns argument on its head to state the following: If starving children are killed at one year old. The children can help to feed the state. Therefore by the end of his proposal he states starving children can benefit the state. This is a style of argument, which shows Swifts indebtedness to Rabelais, who made much of this type of turning a point of view on its head. Another technique of Swifts is to write in character e. g. Gullivers Travels where he writes as a seafaring man on his travels. In Modest Proposal Swift writes as an economist. Therefore the horror of the proposal can be stated in all its shocking detail since it is no more horrible than the horrors already existing and which are sanctioned by that social group, which are the audience of the pamphlet. The educated and well to do classes who had been instrumental in passing the laws which had made Ireland so poverty stricken. Which gives the ultimate irony of A Modest Proposal! Reference to the oppressive laws, which the protestant parliament in London hand inflicted on catholic Ireland. Another technique in Modest Proposal is Swift developed one idea by continued reference to another so that every statement was double edged. E. g. I have already computed the charge . its for the carcass of a good fat child. The horrors are all the more effective because they are presented in such a matter of fact voice, they are introduced easily as evidence to support a rational argument. The appeal is to the readers practical reasonableness no attempt is made to incite pity or indignation, it is only at the end that he makes a full frontal. Swift like every writer has his critics. A. Humphreys says that he favours the intellectual exercise of forming a link between idea and image He puts forward the idea that Ireland is in desperate straits with the poor, and links this with the image of how the Irish poor live. Following on from this is the idea that the problem can be solved, which leads to the image of yearling children, being fattened for the table. a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food D. W Jefferson argues that too much emphasis has been placed on the simplicity of Swifts style. But he sees this style as having a wider purpose a) it follows the be Augustan style which stressed the need for clarity of expression but b) this simple style was essential for Swift because he was often putting over a simple tale i. e. simply told Gullivers Travels. This is also apparent in Modest Proposal where he takes on the persona of an economist who is setting out a list as it were of the economic status quo to follow it with a list of proposals to improve the situation. To concentrate on style in his manner however is to ignore the comic and sometimes-hilarious wit that Swift can show. For this he is indebted to Rabelais, Donne and Jonnson. E. g. In Tale of Tub he leans heaverily on Rabelais by the way in which he exploits ideas to build up comedy and by the way he misapplies learned ideas to support an audacious conclusion. Whilst the wit in Modest Proposal is not of the same satirical play on words as Animal Farm, it does none the less have a strong bite to it. E. g. in Animal Farm. We laugh at the animals, as the thought of a pig climbing up a ladder with a paintbrush in his trotter is amusing. Where as in Modest Proposal when the idea of stewing, roasting, baking or boiling a child is put across at first this is disturbing but taking it into context it is a witty description of a horrific suggestion. Many critics would argue that the greatest satire in English Language is Jonathan Swifts a A Modest Proposal, but because Swift and his narrator are so tightly intertwined, even sophisticated readers often emerge form their confused. He attacks his own Protestant, English community by creating a narrator who considers himself a reasonable and compassionate fellow, but who combines a repulsive anti-Catholic bigotry with modest proposal that is actually a final solution; he advocates cannibalism as a means countering Irish Catholic poverty, abortion, and the high birth rate. Orwells writing style descends directly from that of Swift the Augustan style of writing has been inherited through the centuries. Both literary pieces are political satires, portraying a government of the their time. Swifts is aimed at the upper class politicians in Ireland, where as Orwells is suitable for all ages yet still has a powerful message hidden within its meaning. Written in different genres to reflect was acceptable at the time of writing and the style they are written in. The problems that Orwell encountered when attempting to publish his novella are no means extinct, a twenty first novelist is still encountering these troubles as her novel is a political satire, that is satirising the current British government and their policies and conduct. Carole Haymans Hard Choices is said to be an inappropriate determination to satirise New Labour when Tony Blair is doing so much for America! The novella is futuristic set in 2010. So even today in a society that is said to have evolved and accepts most things and people the literary world is still encountering problems. In conclusion both Swift and Orwells pieces have fulfilled their intent to, instruct the public about the corruption that has in the past taken place within ruling parties and their level of power. Both come from different social classes but in spite of the efforts of the country to oppress its women, these two create strong bonds as a consequence of that very oppression. Mariam was raised in a small, run down shack outside of the main city of Herat. Though she was considered a strong girl, she was also taught to understand her place as a harami, or bastard child. She understood this to be an unattractive role, ââ¬Å"that a harami was an unwanted thing; that she, Mariam, was an illegitimate person who would never have legitimate claim to the things other people had, things such as love, family, home and acceptance.â⬠(Hosseini 4). While she understood this role, she questioned those in authority and the rules she was forced to follow and often dreamed of a better way of life. In fact, she was very close to her father, Jalil, who always spoke to her in kind words fueling her aspirations for something better as she knew being a harami was not her own fault. As she got older, she was tired of feeling guilty about the circumstances of her birth as ââ¬Å"it did not occur to young Mariam to ponder the unfairness of apologizing for the manner of her own birth.â⬠(Hosseini 11). A younger Mariam accepted her role, but the older one desired more in life. She was raised by her mother (Nana) and fell into a deep despair upon her death, especially as she is married off against her will to Rasheed. He forced her into submission taking away all of her hope of a better life until she finally had the courage to rise up in revenge and kill him. Unfortunately for her, the Taliban executed her for this murder. In contrast, Laila had a happier childhood, or at least as happy as it could be for a woman in Afghanistan in the midst of war. She was given an opportunity for education and to realize her full potential. It will thereafter analyze any contrast or connection that exists between these teachings of love, with the ideas of Kant. In the symposium, Pausanias denotes that the goddess of love is Aphrodite and there are two types of love, the earthly love, and the heavenly love. Aphrodite is associated with both. Through this speech, we are able to find out that the Greeks believed that all types of love emanates from god that is Aphrodite (Plato, 535). This is both good and bad love. By good love, Pausanias means heavenly love, and by bad, love, Pausanias means common or earthly love. Pausanias believes that loving an individual is neither a positive nor a negative activity. This is because, if it is done properly, then this is a good love, and if it is done negatively, then it becomes a bad love (Plato, 536). Pausanias further believes that common love is bad. This is because the attraction that emanates from common love is indiscriminating, and it is always directed towards the body of an individual. This is as opposed to their minds. It is therefore to the belief of Pausanias, that the fruits of common love involve lust, an interest in women and men, and other negative issues such as sodomy, lesbianism, and even homosexuality. Relationships that are developed out of these issues emanate from common love, and they are only interested in the body of an individual, as opposed to the mind of an individual. Furthermore, the proponents of common love believe that when their target is less intelligence, then it is good. This is because they can easily get their target, and misuse them. Based on these facts therefore, it is possible to denote that earthly or common love, is selfish, and unjust, hence it is a bad type of love. Socrates explains this concept of heavenly love, based on the views of Diotima. Its a dance that tells a story about love and affection between a male lover and a bashful teasing woman. The Rumba is a slow dance that is said to be the Grandfather of the Latin dances and the dance of love. To pull off a great rumba dancers must show a very soft hip. When dancing this dance dancers must never do heels leads all steps are taken using the balls of the feet and the walks should be strong and straight. The original Rumba originated from African slaves during the 16th century but during WW2 another dance known as The Son became popular in Cuba it was still the Rumba but slower. Paso Doble Paso Doble meaning double step in Spanish is the most masculine and dramatic dance of all Latin dances. Traditionally the Paso Doble is about the matador killing the bull in which the man is the matador and the women is either the cape or the bull. This dance is different from other Latin dances because it didnt come from Latin America it originated from southern France but it is modeled after the drama, movement and sound of the Spanish bullfight, because the dance came from France the steps are in French. In Paso Doble there has to be tension between the dancers and dancers take strong steps forward and include artistic hand movements. Samba is a fun, fast and energetic party dance from Brazils Rio Carnaval. This dance not like the other ones is made up of different South American dances incorporated into one. It requires a lot of hip action and is meant to look bouncy and effortless. It is the hardest dance of all Latin dances. Samba begun in Brazil in the 19th century and it is performed as a street dance at Brazils carnaval. Samba is very popular in Rio and in the United States. It was first introduced in the U.S in 1933. Samba is danced by using the balls of the feet. Many samba dances include a move called Botafogo. The basic step is called a Volta. Mambo Sensual, Passionate, fast and all about the hips the Mambo is a fun dance that has Cuban and African rhythms. It originated from the Haitians living in Cuba. Mambo is popular around the world as both a competitive and social dance. Waltz The Waltz is danced all over the world whether in weddings, parties or competitions. It is a very elegant dance that is meant to look effortless and graceful. In Waltz your posture, frame, and foot work have to be excellent to make it look pleasant. Throughout the dance couples must rise, fall, and turn while keeping a closed hold. The character for this dance should be romantic, smooth, and gentle. The word Waltz comes from the German word Waltzen which means to turn. The Waltz originated in the 17th century in southern Germany and then became popular in France and England. Tango Tango is one of the most intriguing Ballroom dances. Its a very passionate and very seductive dance. Tango is one of the most common and classic ballroom dances worldwide. Most people that watch the tango get easily confused with the argentine tango. Even though the tango is inspired by the argentine tango they are both completely different dances in which the argentine tango is more passionate and fiery while the tango is a more progressive dance. The Tango originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the late 19th Century. The story behind the tango is that the Gauchos would ride their horses all day and later would go to the bar and dance with the ladies and since they hadnt showered they would usually dance with their faces away from each other. Foxtrot The Foxtrot is a very classy and very elegant dance. It is similar to the quickstep but slower. It is one of the most popular ballroom dances in history. Its known for its smooth style. The foxtrot was developed in the 1920s in the United States. It was invented by American vaudeville actor Harry Fox who performed it with his wife regularly at shows in New York. As a result People fell in love with its smooth movements. In Foxtrot the slow steps are performed with the heel while the quick steps are performed with the toe. The timing in foxtrot is very important. Quickstep The Quickstep is a fast and happy dance with difficult footwork. It is the fastest ballroom dance but fun and easy to learn. This dance originated in a place that doesnt exist now-a-days, called Black Bottom in Detroit. During the 1920s while people danced the foxtrot many bands would play the music too fast for them to keep up and then eventually over time a fast version was formed. Like the Foxtrot Quickstep is elegant. In Quickstep in must include fast kicks, and smooth gliding action. The basic feel of the Quickstep is Slow-Quick-Quick-Slow where the Quick is performed on the balls of the feet and the Slow on the heel. To make this dance look effortless dancers must be light on their feet. The costumes in dancing are as important as the dance. And like the dance the costumes are complex. If you have the right music and the right choreography but the wrong costume the whole dance is going to look completely off. The costumes should help tell the story of the dance. Dance costumes have changed so much since the 19th century womens dresses have gotten shorter, more revealing and are showier. And mens trousers were more fitted. The costumes in dancing take a while to design and make as they are so difficult and often have a lot of patterns and sequences. So shows like Dancing with the stars, strictly come dancing and many more usually design their costumes at least 6 months in advanced. Latin and ballroom dance costumes are completely different from each other. Ballroom dance costumes men were tuxedos sometimes with tails and women wear long-mid half dresses because ballroom costumes cant be flashy but have to be light, long, and not glitzy so it can highlight the story and style of dance. While the Latin dances have to be short, exotic, and glitzy to show how spicy the dance is. For this type of dance women wear short colorful dresses with a lot of sequences and rhinestones while the men wear shirts and trousers. The make-up is also important. In ballroom is soft but in Latin its more dramatic Deborah Rinconhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05709492370814293924noreply@blogger.com0
